Our Vision for a Future Community Hub & Performing Arts Center

Melvindale Thrive Initiative is working toward one of our biggest long-term goals yet: creating a Community Hub & Performing Arts Center that can serve as a home for arts, culture, history, community resources, youth programming, safety education, and MTI’s future headquarters.

We currently have an intern helping us research financing options, capital resources, potential partners, available properties, and the organizations and institutions we need to contact to determine what is financially possible and how we can responsibly bring this vision to life.

The final location has not been decided.

Melvindale is where our organization began, it will always be important to us, and it remains our primary community. However, this project does not necessarily have to be physically located in Melvindale. If another Downriver community is willing to work with us, help identify an appropriate property, donate or help secure land, develop a partnership, or provide another opportunity that makes the project financially feasible, we are willing to bring this vision there.

Our goal is not to compete with neighboring communities. We believe our Downriver communities are stronger when we work together. No community is more deserving than another, and residents should not have to live within one particular city boundary to benefit from opportunities, resources, arts, education, culture, or community connection.

Over the next five years, MTI intends to continue expanding programming throughout the Downriver area while maintaining our commitment to Melvindale. We especially hope to build stronger relationships and programming opportunities in communities such as Ecorse and River Rouge, where residents and families also face significant needs and where collaboration could create greater opportunities for everyone.

A Performing Arts Space

Our vision includes a beautiful performing arts theater with a quality stage, along with rehearsal and practice space for plays, music, performances, youth productions, community theater, and other cultural programming.

We want this to be a place where children and adults can experience the performing arts close to home, where local talent can be developed and celebrated, and where affordable programming can be available to people who may not otherwise have access to these experiences.

A Home for Local History

We would also like to offer the Historical Society dedicated space within the facility, including its own entrance and exit so it can display collections, preserve local history, conduct its own programming, and welcome visitors independently.

Our intention would be to provide this space as part of the nonprofit community hub without charging rent, helping preserve and share the history of the community for future generations.

Arts, Crafts & Creative Learning

The facility would include a dedicated arts and crafts area where children, adults, seniors, and families could participate in affordable classes, workshops, and creative programming.

We would also like to create places throughout the building where children's artwork can be displayed and celebrated, giving young people the experience of seeing their creativity treated as something valuable.

Community Resources Under One Roof

Another major part of our vision is creating a place where residents can receive help navigating community resources.

MTI is already developing its community-resource work, and our long-term goal is to have trained staff — potentially including a professional social worker or resource navigator — who can help residents identify services, benefits, assistance programs, and organizations that may be able to help them.

The building would become the headquarters of Melvindale Thrive Initiative and could include:

MTI offices and administrative space
Community meeting rooms
Neighborhood Watch and community-safety programming
CERT and emergency-preparedness education
Youth leadership and enrichment activities
Arts, crafts, music and cultural programming
Historical exhibits and educational programming
Resource navigation and community assistance
Affordable community room rentals
Children's art displays
Volunteer and nonprofit activities

Outdoor Community Space

Our long-term vision also includes an outdoor performance and gathering area where musicians, performers, families, nonprofit organizations, and community groups could gather for concerts, performances, educational activities, and community events.

Depending on the eventual property and site design, the location could potentially support other programs as well, including future Farmers Market activities and seasonal community events.

Possible Housing Above the Community Space

If the property, financing, design, zoning, and available funding make it economically feasible, our master vision also includes the possibility of developing a second floor containing apartments, particularly over portions of the building where residential construction would be practical.

This would be explored only if it strengthens the overall project financially and fits the final site and community.

We Are Looking for Partners

This is a large vision, and it will not happen overnight.

We are interested in hearing from cities, landowners, developers, foundations, corporations, financial institutions, architects, builders, arts organizations, historical organizations, housing partners, community organizations, donors, and others who may be interested in helping us explore what is possible.

Support could include land, property, grants, capital funding, financing, professional services, architectural or development assistance, equipment, materials, sponsorships, or other in-kind contributions.

We are willing to listen to opportunities throughout Downriver.

Our goal is not simply to construct a building.

Our goal is to create a place where children can learn, artists can create, performers can perform, history can be preserved, residents can find help, seniors can remain connected, young people can develop leadership skills, neighbors can meet, and communities can work together.

Melvindale will always be in our heart and at the foundation of what we do — but our vision is bigger than one city. We want to help build stronger connections and greater opportunities throughout Downriver.
