Neighborhood Watch Goals

Our Neighborhood Watch program is designed to help create a safer, more connected community by:

Encouraging neighbors to communicate and look out for one another.

Increasing awareness of neighborhood safety concerns.

Providing safety education and crime-prevention information.

Building trust and cooperation among residents.

Encouraging residents to report concerns through the proper channels.

Promoting positive community involvement rather than confrontation.

Strengthening communication between residents and appropriate public-safety resources.

Creating a stronger sense of connection, responsibility, and pride within neighborhoods.

That matches the framework we already established: resident-led outreach, communication, safety education, prevention, community engagement, and neighborhood trust-building.

Melvindale Neighborhood Watch

Pillar 9 — Community Safety, Neighborhood Watch & Emergency Preparedness

The Melvindale Neighborhood Watch is an official program of Melvindale Thrive Initiative and is included within our broader community-safety work.

The program is currently in the organizing and resource-building stage.

We already have a Melvindale Neighborhood Watch Facebook group in place to begin building community awareness and communication, while Melvindale Thrive Initiative works to obtain the funding, materials, guidance, and resources needed to develop the full hands-on program.

Guidance From the Sheriff’s Department

Melvindale Thrive Initiative contacted the sheriff’s department directly to ask about Neighborhood Watch training and how to properly establish and register a program.

We were advised that the previous Neighborhood Watch teaching/training program is no longer being offered in that format.

The sheriff’s department told us that they are currently revising their Neighborhood Watch information and developing a new booklet and updated registration process.

Once those materials are completed, organizations and neighborhood groups will have a new way to obtain the information they need and formally sign up.

We expect to use those updated materials when they become available and continue the formal registration process for Melvindale Neighborhood Watch.

What We Are Doing Now

While we wait for the updated sheriff’s department materials, Melvindale Thrive Initiative is continuing to prepare the program.

We are working to:

Secure funding and needed supplies

Gather reliable Neighborhood Watch and crime-prevention resources

Identify training and educational materials

Build community participation

Develop appropriate procedures and safety guidance

Connect with law-enforcement agencies and other public-safety resources outside of the local police department

Create a program that helps residents communicate, learn, prepare, and look out for one another safely

Melvindale Thrive Initiative is not currently working with the local police department on this program.

We will instead use available resources from the sheriff’s department, other law-enforcement agencies, public-safety organizations, community partners, and qualified individuals who can help us build the program responsibly.

Our Goal

Neighborhood Watch is not about residents acting as police officers.

It is about helping neighbors become more informed, connected, observant, and prepared.

As the program grows, we want to provide residents with practical information about:

Neighborhood awareness

Crime prevention

When and how to report concerns

Emergency preparedness

Community communication

Personal and family safety

Available public-safety resources
