We believe greener spaces create stronger communities. By transforming neglected land into places for native plants, wildlife habitat, food-growing, learning, and gathering, we can give families places to connect with nature, neighbors a place to come together, and future generations a healthier community to call home.
Greener spaces today. Healthier, more connected communities tomorrow.
Melvindale Thrive Initiative is working to transform neglected vacant land into a safe, beautiful, environmentally responsible community asset. Our goal is to take land that is sitting unused and turn it into something productive, educational, welcoming, and beneficial to the community instead of allowing it to remain overgrown, littered, forgotten, or unusable.
The Eco-Park is being planned as a permanent charitable and educational greenspace. We want to preserve as much of the natural environment as possible while creating carefully managed areas for environmental education, youth and family activities, community gardening, pollinator habitat, volunteer service, neighborhood beautification, and responsible public use.
Plans may include raised food-growing beds using clean soil, native flowers and plants, butterfly and pollinator gardens, accessible seating and benches, educational signs, outdoor learning and gathering areas, secure storage for tools and supplies, and environmentally responsible water-conservation systems.
A major goal is to create habitat for butterflies, bees, birds, and other beneficial pollinators while preserving healthy trees and natural areas whenever possible. The Eco-Park can become a place where children and families learn about gardening, native plants, pollinators, biodiversity, composting, soil health, growing food, water conservation, environmental stewardship, and sustainable practices.
The community-garden portion of the project will provide opportunities for residents to learn how food is grown and how gardens are maintained. When possible, food grown through the project may also be used to benefit the community.
The Eco-Park is intended to be accessible and welcoming to people of different ages and abilities. Seniors can have places to sit and enjoy the greenspace. Children and teens can participate in supervised educational and volunteer activities. Residents with disabilities will be considered as the site and programming are developed.
We also want residents, youth leaders, gardeners, volunteers, businesses, environmental organizations, and community partners to have meaningful opportunities to help care for and improve the space.
We do not want to create something that looks beautiful for one season and then becomes neglected again. Long-term maintenance is an important part of the plan. MTI intends to use volunteer stewards, seasonal maintenance schedules, fundraising, sponsorships, grants, donated materials, inspections, litter removal, planting, watering, pollinator care, repairs, and ongoing community involvement to help keep the Eco-Park safe, attractive, and productive.
The Eco-Park is intended to be the beginning of a much larger vision.
Melvindale Thrive Initiative wants to identify vacant, abandoned, neglected, tax-foreclosed, land-bank, or otherwise underused properties that are not being returned to productive use and, whenever acquisition or lawful use is possible, transform them into positive community spaces.
Instead of allowing vacant lots to remain overgrown, collect garbage, or contribute to neighborhood blight, we want to explore opportunities to turn them into pollinator gardens, native-flower gardens, community food gardens, pocket parks, sitting areas, youth environmental-learning spaces, beautification projects, tree and wildlife habitat areas, or other productive greenspaces.
Not every property has to become the same thing. One lot might become a butterfly and pollinator garden. Another could contain raised vegetable beds. Another might simply need native flowers, trees, benches, and a clean place for neighbors to sit. Other properties could support youth projects, public art, gardening education, or community volunteer activities.
Our long-term goal is to build a network of beautiful and productive community spaces throughout Melvindale and, as MTI grows and develops the funding, partnerships, and capacity to responsibly maintain them, throughout other Downriver communities as well.
We want to take properties that nobody is using and give them a purpose.
Cleaner neighborhoods. More green space. More flowers and pollinators. More opportunities to grow food. More places for neighbors to gather. More opportunities for children to learn. And fewer neglected properties sitting unused in our communities.
That is the larger vision behind the Melvindale Community Eco-Park!
Melvindale Thrive Initiative is continuing to work toward making our future Eco-Park and community green-space project a reality.
We have already submitted two major funding requests connected to this project:
On July 11, 2026, we submitted a grant request for $48,500.
On September 3, 2026, we submitted another grant request for $12,500.
Both are still pending.
We are also actively working through an application to purchase property for the project. That application was submitted on August 6, 2026. We are intentionally not sharing the proposed property location publicly while that process is ongoing.
And we are not stopping there.
We are currently researching and pursuing at least seven additional funding opportunities, with an eighth opportunity also under consideration if time allows.
These applications take a tremendous amount of time to research, write, budget, document, submit, and track. Because of that, Melvindale Thrive Initiative is also looking for a full-time or highly committed grant writer who would like to help us continue pursuing funding for projects like this.
The Eco-Park vision includes native plants, pollinator habitat, community gardening, environmental education, beautification, seating, signage, and a welcoming green space for the community.
We are still in the building stage, but every application brings us one step closer.
