Downriver Vibe Tribe brings people together through historical, cultural, educational, recreational, and social experiences throughout Downriver and Southeast Michigan.
What began as a community Facebook group has grown into an official program of Melvindale Thrive Initiative, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. Our goal is to create affordable and accessible opportunities for people of different ages, abilities, incomes, and backgrounds to get out into the community, experience new places, learn, build friendships, and feel connected.
Our participants have included older adults, veterans, people with disabilities and mobility limitations, young adults with developmental or learning disabilities, people recovering from surgery, individuals living on limited incomes, and people simply looking for friendship and somewhere welcoming to belong.
We currently focus heavily on historical and cultural experiences, including museums, theaters, architectural and historical tours, historic churches, cemetery history, cultural attractions, concerts, arts activities, book club gatherings, educational programs, community events, meals, coffee gatherings, and other shared experiences.
Over the years, our members have visited places including the Fox Theatre, Detroit Opera House, Guardian Building, Fisher Building, Pewabic Pottery, Woodlawn Cemetery, Mount Olivet Cemetery, Elmwood Cemetery, historic homes, festivals, concerts, and many other cultural and community destinations.
Many people want to participate in community activities but cannot always afford admission, transportation, parking, meals, or other costs associated with attending.
For someone living on a fixed or limited income, even a $5 movie ticket can sometimes be out of reach.
Others face transportation barriers, mobility limitations, disability, social isolation, depression, grief, retirement, or simply do not have someone to attend an activity with.
We believe community connection matters.
A museum visit, theater performance, historical tour, movie, concert, art activity, book club meeting, or shared meal can give someone something to look forward to, an opportunity to meet others, and a reason to become more connected to the community.
We welcome support from businesses, foundations, museums, theaters, cultural organizations, historical organizations, restaurants, transportation companies, corporations, community organizations, and individual donors.
Support can include:
Sponsored admission or tickets
Free or discounted group admission
Private or behind-the-scenes tours
Transportation assistance
Venue or meeting-space donations
Meals or refreshments
Arts and activity supplies
Gift cards
Event sponsorships
In-kind professional services
Printing or promotional assistance
Corporate volunteer support
Program grants or unrestricted charitable donations
A business or organization can also host a Downriver Vibe Tribe experience and introduce participants to its history, work, facility, employees, or community impact.
We are especially interested in opportunities that people may not normally be able to experience on their own.
If your company, foundation, organization, or business would like to sponsor an activity, provide an in-kind donation, host our participants, provide discounted admission, or support the program financially, we would love to hear from you.
Your support can help someone experience something they may otherwise never have the opportunity to do.
One friendship. One adventure. One shared experience at a time.
